It's often said that dimes can add up to dollars, but some dimes themselves are worth far more than just a few dollars. As noted by Gainesville Coins, there have been U.S. dimes that have sold for over a million dollars.
Most collectors agree that older coins are generally more valuable than their newer counterparts, yet there are still dimes in circulation that are worth your time to find. However, temper your expectations as only a few dimes in circulation hold significant value, and these are typically rare errors known to exist in very limited numbers.
U.S. coins are minted for circulation or as collector items at three primary facilities: Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco. When sorting through your change, always set aside any pre-1965 Roosevelt dimes, as they contain 90% silver and are worth much more than their face value.
Although antique dimes can sell for substantial amounts, the value of dimes, especially those still in circulation, often depends on their condition. Serious collectors always seek high-quality specimens.
While most circulating dimes aren’t exceptionally valuable, there are specific dates and varieties that are worth noting. Here are 10 U.S. dimes that may hold additional value due to their rarity or unique features, listed from oldest to newest:
10 Valuable U.S. Dimes Still in Circulation
1. 1965 Roosevelt Dime, No Mint Mark
The 1965 Roosevelt Dime without a mint mark, produced by the Philadelphia Mint, is quite common. However, some 1965 dimes in excellent condition can be valued over $1,000, though most range from 20 cents to $2.50. Silver varieties have fetched thousands.
2. 1968-S No-S Roosevelt Proof Dime
The 1968-S No-S Roosevelt Proof Dime is a proof error coin highly prized by collectors. Since 1986, the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) has certified only 18 of these coins. One sold at Heritage Auctions for over $40,000 in 2008.
3. 1970-S Roosevelt Dime, No Mint Mark
A few 1970-S Roosevelt Dimes were mistakenly struck without the mint mark, making them valuable. Coin Appraiser estimates these coins to be worth approximately $250.
4. 1972-S Roosevelt Dime
This regular dime is a good example of a coin with modest value. CoinTrackers.com values a 1972 Roosevelt dime in average condition at 10 cents, and up to $36 in mint state. A proof dime from this year sold for $8,400 in 2008.
5. 1975 No-S Roosevelt Dime
The 1975 No-S proof Roosevelt dime is one of the most valuable modern coins, with only two known specimens. The most recent sale reached nearly $456,000 due to its rarity, as noted by CoinValueChecker.
6. 1982 and 1983 Roosevelt Dimes, No Mint Mark
Dimes from 1982 and 1983 without a mint mark can be valuable. Some 1982 dimes struck at the Philadelphia Mint lack the “P” mint mark. These can be valued around $65, and up to $175 for uncirculated examples, according to Greysheet. The 1983-S Roosevelt dimes were struck only as proof coins, making them rarer.
7. 1996-W Roosevelt Dime
The 1996-W Roosevelt Dime, issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the Roosevelt dime design, has a limited mintage of 1.457 million. Included in 1996 uncirculated sets, this is the only non-bullion coin ever issued at the West Point Mint, per Gainesville Coins.
8. 1998-P Bonded Group of Roosevelt Dimes
This unique mint error resulted in approximately 32 distorted dimes bonded together. Stack’s Bowers Galleries sold this for $9,200, highlighting the rarity and uniqueness of mint errors.
9. 1999-D Roosevelt Dime
One of these “Type 2 Clad Regular Strike” error dimes sold for $14,375 in 2009. However, those in average condition generally only fetch a few dollars, according to RobPaulsenLive.com.
10. 2020-D Roosevelt Dime
In 2021, one of these dimes sold for $338 on eBay. The 2020-D Roosevelt Dime has a lower mintage compared to other years, which can make it more collectible. Typically, they sell for less than $15 when in excellent condition.
